Things To Check Before You Call

We’re always ready and willing to take care of your HVAC service needs. But to be honest, there may be occasions when there’s a simple and safe solution that you can perform to save yourself the time and expense of a visit from one of our technicians. Here are some common causes of HVAC failure that you can check for yourself. Some of these items may seem pretty obvious—but they are the first things we’ll check when we arrive at your home. Taking a few minutes to check them could solve your problem and save you the expense and bother of a service call.

If you’re not getting heat from your furnace, check the following first:

  • Is your thermostat set in the “heat” position? It’s not unusual for the switch to get accidentally knocked into the “cool” or “off” position.
  • If the thermostat window is blank (not showing any temperature), we recommend checking your batteries and changing them when necessary. We actually recommend that homeowners replace the batteries whenever the time changes from Daylight Savings to Standard time (and vice versa). It’s also a great time to change the batteries in your fire alarms and CO detectors.
  • If there is no air coming out of your registers, check to make sure they are not blocked by furniture or rugs—or that they’ve inadvertently been closed,
  • Change your furnace filter regularly.  We recommend 3-months or less if you have pets or high traffic in and out of the house. Furnace filters are an inexpensive and easy fix—and can help ensure your furnace performs better.

NOTE: Don’t take chances with potential gas leaks or with carbon monoxide poisoning.  If you smell natural gas, call Utilities right away and call us. And make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. If you have any concerns about your safety or about your ability to check an issue, please don’t hesitate to call us. We’d rather be safe than sorry. But the items listed above are things tasks we believe you can easily and safely do before enlisting the services of a professional.
